Meet Dr. Coleman
Dr. Coleman is a physician with more than 40 years in long-term recovery from addiction to opioids, alcohol, and other substances. His personal experience with addiction began during medical school in New Zealand, where he earned his degree in 1980. In October 1984, he entered a rehab program that marked the start of his recovery journey and the foundation for a career dedicated to helping others do the same.
After completing a Family Practice residency at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and a fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Coleman devoted his life’s work to the treatment of opioid use disorder. In 2001, he developed an innovative method of treating patients using long-acting naltrexone and founded the Coleman Institute to expand access to this care. Under his leadership, the Coleman Institute grew into a national network of clinics and successfully treated thousands of patients.
Dr. Coleman has lectured widely and trained medical professionals across the country in evidence-based approaches to addiction treatment. Today, he continues his mission, bringing decades of clinical expertise and personal insight to the conversation around recovery.
